Great Park in Irvine, California, hosted an event that went beyond music: the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, headlined by Olivia Rodrigo. The festival, which sold out in just 30 minutes, not only offered a diverse musical lineup but also stood out for its philanthropic commitment, allocating $10 million to ten nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting women and girls.

According to a report by Rolling Stone, Rodrigo delivered on her promise of special guests, taking the stage with legendary figures like Sarah McLachlan, founder of the inspiring Lilith Fair festival, Alanis Morissette, and Stevie Nicks. The superstar shared her excitement with the crowd, declaring, "This is the best day of my fuckin' life!"

A Festival with Purpose

Daisy Chain Fields, envisioned as an inclusive celebration, was more than just a music event. The inspiration from Lilith Fair, a groundbreaking festival from the nineties, was evident in its focus on uniting music fans while supporting important causes.

A day before the festival, Olivia Rodrigo announced the $10 million donation. This amount will be given directly to ten partner organizations, all advocates for the rights and well-being of women and girls. Beneficiaries include Baby2Baby, which provides basic necessities to children in need; Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), dedicated to the rights and resources for Black mothers; the Center for Reproductive Rights, a legal organization advocating for global reproductive health; and Planned Parenthood, which works to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive healthcare. Net proceeds from the event are directed to the Daisy Chain Fields Fund, which manages these donations.

Community and Experience

"Joy" was a word that often resonated at the pre-event press conference, and that feeling was palpable throughout the festival grounds. Attendees had the opportunity to visit "Daisy Chain Reaction," an area where nonprofit organizations interacted with the public, offering activities like making daisy chains and flower crowns.

Many fans, mostly young women dressed in Rodrigo's signature style, said their love for the artist drew them in, but also their desire for a better world for women and girls. Alannie, 18, explained to Rolling Stone that the ticket price was a significant investment, but upon learning Rodrigo's motive, she saw it as an opportunity to support the foundations. Nerissa, one of a trio of Filipina women in their early thirties, added that she "very strongly resonate[s] with the different organizations she was promoting," and mentioned having used Planned Parenthood's services in the past. Her friend Monica highlighted the importance of representation, noting that Rodrigo is Filipino and the lineup of artists was exceptional.

An Inspiring Musical Lineup

The festival featured 14 performances over 10 hours of music. Artists like Quiet Light (Riya Mahesh), Eli Miller, and Rachel Chinouriri kept the energy high on stage. Eli Miller, amidst songs like "Nobody’s Girl" and "Girl of Your Dreams," shared a powerful message about loving our neighbors, regardless of their beliefs, and also pledged money to some of the day’s participating organizations.

Why it matters

The Daisy Chain Fields festival is an example of how music and entertainment can be powerful platforms for social change. By combining high-profile performances with a tangible commitment to important causes, Olivia Rodrigo created a space where fun and awareness converged, demonstrating that fan passion can become a driving force for those working towards a more equitable future.
