Wall Street's attention is turning to Alphabet (GOOG), the company behind Google, as it prepares to announce its third-quarter 2026 financial results on October 28. Analysts are anticipating notable growth, especially in revenue, which could influence its stock performance in a market closely watching the tech sector's performance.
According to estimates compiled by Zacks Equity Research and published on Yahoo Finance, Alphabet is expected to report a 27.7% increase in revenue compared to the same period last year, reaching $111.68 billion. Earnings per share (EPS) are also projected to rise, with an estimated $2.94 per share, representing a 2.4% year-over-year growth. These projections reflect a 1.51% upward revision in consensus EPS estimates over the last 30 days, indicating a collective reassessment by analysts.
Expectations Amidst a Cautious Market
This earnings report comes at an interesting time for the tech market. After an initial rally driven by artificial intelligence companies, the sector has shown some volatility. As CNBC reported, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rallied due to AI companies, but investors are now more focused on whether companies can meet the high earnings growth expectations built into their valuations.
Overall earnings season expectations are high: analysts expect S&P 500 company profits to grow by nearly 30% from the year-earlier period, according to FactSet data cited by CNBC. This means that companies, particularly tech giants like Alphabet, have a high bar to clear. Ron Albahary, chief investment officer at LNW, told CNBC that the market needs "proof statements from any company that is considered part of the AI trade that they can deliver on the earnings growth expectations being built into their pricing."
VideoWill Alphabet Deliver an Earnings Surprise?
While the overall figures are promising, there are some nuances. Zacks Equity Research uses a proprietary prediction model, the Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction), which compares the "Most Accurate Estimate" to the "Zacks Consensus Estimate." For Alphabet, the Most Accurate Estimate is slightly lower than the consensus, resulting in a negative Earnings ESP of -0.61%, according to Yahoo Finance. This suggests that analysts have recently adjusted their expectations downward, potentially indicating that a positive earnings surprise is less likely.
However, Alphabet has a strong track record. The company has beaten EPS estimates in the last four consecutive quarters. In the previous quarter, for instance, it reported $9.11 per share when $2.88 was expected, delivering a surprise of +216.32%, according to Zacks. Additionally, Alphabet's stock currently holds a Zacks Rank of #2, which is considered a "Buy" recommendation. Despite the combination of a negative ESP and a buy rank, Zacks indicates that it is difficult to conclusively predict whether Alphabet will beat the consensus EPS estimate this time.
The market is adopting a more "discriminating" approach to tech, meaning that success for AI stocks won't be uniform, as Ron Albahary explained to CNBC. This could lead to some companies continuing to rise while others, burdened by debt to finance their projects, might see declines. Sameer Samana of Wells Fargo Investment Institute also commented that the action in the AI trade appears to be more of a "reality check" than a "full-blown unraveling," anticipating perhaps more pressure in the days and weeks ahead.
What to Watch for on October 28
Beyond the direct numbers, investors will be closely watching what Alphabet's management says about business conditions during the earnings call. The sustainability of any immediate price change and future earnings expectations will largely depend on this discussion, as noted by Yahoo Finance. How the company addresses challenges and opportunities across its various segments, from digital advertising to cloud computing and artificial intelligence, will be crucial.
In this context, attention will focus not only on whether Alphabet meets or beats expectations but also on the company's future outlook, especially in key areas like artificial intelligence. Recently, we've seen how OpenAI's new Astra model boosted Nvidia and Broadcom, and interest in AI continues to be a major driver for the sector. Alphabet's investments in AI, such as its Gemini model and its applications in products like Google Search, will be key discussion points.
Why it matters
Alphabet's results are a key barometer for the tech sector and the broader economy. Strong performance could reaffirm confidence in the growth of major tech companies, especially those with a strong presence in AI and digital advertising, and serve as an indicator for market direction. Conversely, failing to meet expectations could lead to caution in a market already re-evaluating valuations and the future of artificial intelligence. The market's reaction to these numbers will be an important indicator of where investors are headed in the final quarter of the year, setting the tone for other companies yet to report.
