Renowned research firm Evercore ISI has significantly raised its price forecast for Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) shares to $110, a notable increase from its prior target of $100. This update, issued on September 14, maintains an "Outperform" rating for the leading streaming platform. The decision is rooted in a forward-looking analysis, projecting the company's valuation out to 2028 and applying a multiple of 25 times its estimated earnings per share for that year. This new price target suggests a substantial potential for growth, implying an upside exceeding 40% when compared to the stock's $76.41 value on September 16. It's important to note that Evercore ISI's increased projection comes after a challenging period for Netflix, whose shares have experienced a decline of approximately 16% year-to-date, and remain well below their 52-week high of $124.86.
Ad-Tier Momentum and Market Expansion
To support its optimistic outlook, Evercore ISI drew upon detailed market survey results. The firm conducted its 58th quarterly US survey and 12th semi-annual Japan survey, specifically focusing on Netflix subscriber behavior. The data revealed highly promising trends: Netflix's penetration in the US market reached an impressive 63%, marking its highest level in several years. In Japan, expansion was equally remarkable, hitting a record-high 22% penetration. Beyond sheer user numbers, subscriber engagement and satisfaction levels are key factors. In Japan, for instance, an encouraging 58% of respondents stated they were "slightly or not at all likely to cancel" their subscription, indicating strong retention. Overall subscriber satisfaction in that country was also high, reaching 67%. One of the most successful strategies identified is the ad-supported subscription plan. In Japan, this tier attracted new audiences: approximately 66% of its subscribers were either returning users or individuals joining Netflix for the first time. In the United States, the ad-supported plan has proven to be an effective tool for preventing customer churn. Roughly 35% of subscribers who were considering canceling their accounts instead opted to switch to the ad-supported option, demonstrating its value in sustaining net subscriber growth and reducing cancellations in both the US and Japan.
Investor Concerns and Challenges
Despite these positive points, Netflix continues to navigate an environment with ongoing challenges and some investor concerns. Parnassus Investments, in its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Parnassus Growth Equity Fund," commented that while the company reported solid first-quarter results, management chose not to raise its full-year revenue guidance. This decision led to some disappointment in the market. Another factor that may have influenced confidence in the shares was the announcement that co-founder Reed Hastings plans to step down from the board of directors. In addition to these internal factors, Netflix faces intense and evolving competition. The platform must contend with a growing array of free streaming services and other paid platforms, which could make it harder to further increase the share of time consumers spend watching content on its service. Hedge fund interest in the stock has also shown a slight decline. According to Insider Monkey data, the number of hedge fund portfolios holding Netflix shares decreased from 144 in the first quarter to 121 in the second quarter, indicating a minor withdrawal by some large investors.
Overall Analyst Sentiment
Despite the concerns mentioned, the general sentiment among Wall Street analysts remains predominantly optimistic. As of September 16, a significant 69% of the 54 analysts covering Netflix shares maintained a "Buy" rating. The median 12-month price target these analysts projected was $93.50. Even before Evercore ISI's recent update, this figure already suggested a potential upside of 22.37% for the stock, similar to trends seen in broader market analyses, as we discussed in this article on QQQ ETFs. A positive indicator is that short interest, which reflects bets on a price decline, remains relatively low. As of August 31, the proportion of shares held short represented only 2.21% of the company's float, suggesting a limited bearish position among investors overall. This contrasts with other stocks that often see higher short-selling activity when expectations are more negative.
Why it matters
Netflix's future is shaped by an interesting blend of positive signals and underlying challenges. On one hand, the company has demonstrated a strong capacity to expand its subscriber base and has found its ad-supported plan to be an effective tool for attracting new users and securing existing loyalties. Evercore ISI's survey results reinforce this view, showing healthy market penetration in key regions. However, competition in the streaming sector remains fierce, and revenue growth expectations, alongside changes in executive leadership, are factors closely watched by investors. Evercore ISI's new price target provides significant backing to the bullish case, suggesting that, despite recent fluctuations, Netflix's business model holds considerable potential for the future, although market volatility and competitive dynamics demand constant attention.
