Sánchez Skips Trump's UN Reception Amid Ceuta Crisis Tensions
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will not attend Donald Trump's reception at the UN General Assembly, citing “scheduling conflicts.” The decision comes at a time of diplomatic strain with the United States, exacerbated by the migration crisis in Ceuta.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will not attend the reception hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump for heads of state and government at the UN General Assembly. Moncloa, the Spanish Prime Minister's official residence, received the invitation last week, but the head of the Spanish Executive will not be present, according to government sources, due to “scheduling conflicts.” This absence occurs at a sensitive time for relations between the two countries, especially with the recent migration crisis in Ceuta and visible U.S. support for Morocco.
The Official Schedule and Unlisted Meetings
The official justification from the Spanish government for Sánchez's absence has been “scheduling conflicts.” However, the official agenda published late Monday only listed one event until 4:00 PM New York time (10:00 PM Spain time), a meeting of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Defenders group, as reported by El Mundo. Trump's reception, on the other hand, was scheduled for 7:00 PM New York time (1:00 AM in Spain).
Following persistent questions from journalists, Spanish government sources mentioned unlisted bilateral meetings. These appointments, which would take place between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM in New York, reportedly include meetings with the Governor of California, the former Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz justified the situation by stating that the invitation arrived “just a few days ago when the trip was already planned,” even though this reception is an annual event that has only been suspended during the pandemic.
Strained Relations
Relations between the Donald Trump administration and Pedro Sánchez's government have experienced challenging times. El Mundo points out that there have been criticisms from the U.S. president regarding Spain's refusal to increase defense spending to 5% of its GDP, as well as the rejection of allowing Spanish bases to be used in the context of the war against Iran. These differences have maintained constant tension.
The last time Sánchez and Trump met was in the VIP box at the World Cup final, held in New York, where they exchanged only a quick greeting. In previous years, attendance at this reception has varied: in 2025, King Felipe VI attended representing Spain; in 2024, Sánchez missed it due to his address at the General Assembly; and in 2023, with Joe Biden leading the United States, Sánchez was present.
The Shadow of the Ceuta Crisis
Sánchez's presence in New York and his decision not to attend Trump's reception are set against the backdrop of the recent crisis in Ceuta. This migration situation has led to both external and internal criticism of the Spanish Executive's management. In this context, the United States has chosen to show its support for Morocco. Days earlier, in New York, a trilateral photo was taken involving the United States, Morocco, and Israel, highlighting the strong relations between the Trump administration and the Alawi kingdom, and simultaneously, the growing distance with Spain.
Other Engagements in New York
Despite his absence from Trump's reception, Sánchez has other significant engagements scheduled in New York. On Wednesday, the Spanish prime minister will be the special guest at a breakfast organized by the New York City mayor's office and the Global Progress Foundation, which he chairs. The event aims to advocate for an economy oriented toward the majority. Sánchez will meet in person for the first time with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to speak at a colloquium titled “Building an Economy for the Majority” at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York mayors.
Why it matters
Pedro Sánchez's absence from Donald Trump's UN reception, though justified by “scheduling conflicts,” sends a clear diplomatic message. This snub highlights the lowest point in relations between Spain and the United States, further complicated by the Ceuta crisis and Washington's public support for Morocco. The decision reflects a distant stance on a global forum, underscoring the tensions that both governments have maintained on key issues such as defense and foreign policy.
